Pair of "Chinese Chairs" by Hans Wegner Denmark
1943
The elemental and elegant "Chinese Chair" of 1943 was the first great work by Denmark's greatest furniture designer. Of all of the Ming-inspired chairs by Hans Wegner, this early design was the most faithful to its classical model. Handmade and strong, these famous chairs are actually very practical, and in use, extremely comfortable.
These should not be confused with other, more commonly seen Wegner designs in the Chinese style. The "Chinese Chair" has always been very costly (about five times the price of the similar "Wishbone Chair", designed by Wegner in 1949, with an eye towards something resembling mass production), as a consequence of the amount of exacting hand-labor which is required to carve and join the cherry wood; and the precision called for in building a chair whose legs do not require stretchers for structural integrity.
These examples (made by Fritz Hansen, the original manufacturer, in Lynge, Denmark; one of the chairs in 1969 and the other in 1972) retain their original leather cushions.
