A Pair of "Mademoiselle" Chairs by Ilmari Tapiovaara designed in Finland; made in Sweden
ca. 1960
As with George Nakashima's similar explorations, Tapiovaara's variations on the traditional "Windsor chair" theme were usually informed by non-Anglo-American influences (Japanese for Nakashima, Finnish for Tapiovaara), but in the "Mademoiselle" chair Tapiovaara's folkish inpiration seems to have been tempered by a desire to modernize the classic form through simplification.
Delicate and feminine, these low chairs are amazingly comfortable to sit in, for even protracted periods. The nine spindles cradle the back very cozily, almost providing a massage.
