George Nelson "Thin Edge" Cabinet in Brazil Rosewood U.S.A.
late 1950s
This exquisite cabinet has all the bells and whistles one looks for in a "Thin-Edge" series piece: Brazil rosewood; assymetrical layout with four drawers on one side, and accordian door on the other; white pulls and lathe-turned aluminum legs. The beautifully-figured rosewood covers the back of the cabinet as well, a custom-ordered detail that one only rarely encounters. This allows the piece to be "floated" in the middle of a room.
Case goods made by Herman Miller in this period are some of the finest pieces of modern American furniture, and this is especially true of the "Thin Edge" series. This is an early example that retains its rectangular foil Herman Miller label.
