Massive Del Campo Wall-Sculpture by Lidia Lafranconi Italy
1963
This especially massive Del Campo wall sculpture was made in Turin, Italy in 1963. Constructed of welded steel and bronze, with details in yellow, green and orange "grisaile d'oro" enamel. Grisaille d'oro is a rarely seen and very labor-intensive technique, involving the hand-working of layers of gold and silver leaf upon which the translucent enamel is baked. It is a process which yields an enamel surface with amazing depth and complexity, and it was the specialty of the Del Campo atelier.
The Del Campo workshop was known for producing small luxury goods, often designed by famous artists like Gio Ponti. Their large-scale works are rare, and in their day were extremely expensive. In 1963, one could have bought a Mercedes-Benz for what this wall-sculpture cost!
Signed verso "Del Campo Italy 1963" and the signature of the artist.
