Polychrome Sculpture by Jan de Swart U.S.A.
1960s
Jan de Swart was a fascinating exponent of the optimistic Southern California modernist aesthetic promoted in the 1940s through the 1960s by the influential magazine "Arts and Architecture", in whose pages his work frequently appeared. He was an artistic genius no less idiosyncratic than the scuptures he meticulously created out of rare woods, and later, aluminum.
This complex two-sided sculpture is a typical example (except for its colors, which are a bit unusual) of de Swart's playful biomorphism.
This piece is accompanied by a custom-made steel stand, not shown in the photographs.

Condition
There are a few spots where slight wear to the paint is evident; these do not detract very much at all, and actually contribute to the "historicalness" of the object.
