uploading Sculpture by Jan de Swart
U.S.A.
circa 1961
The ceaselessly experimental Jan de Swart discovered that casting aluminum sculptures in wooden molds yielded organic forms with wonderful spontaneity. As the molten aluminum made contact with the wood, the mold would burst into violent flames and often explode, thus ensuring that each piece was not only surpassingly beautiful but also as unique as a living organism.

A photograph of this very piece appears in the published catalog of an exhibition of Jan de Swart's work held at the USC Fisher Museum of Art in 1963. A copy of the catalog accompanies the sculpture.
