Baule Mask Ivory Coast
probably 1950s
The Baule, from the larger group called the Akan, migrated to the Ivory Coast in the 18th century. This mask, used in a special ceremonial dance called Goli, is of a type which had a profound and direct influence on Pablo Picasso.
The form of this mask draws from three animals: antelope, crocodile, and cow. The mask's visual power is dramatic; it is said that women and children were not allowed to look at such masks closely. It is easy to imagine that Picasso was aware of this tradition, and that it drew him even closer to the form.
