Velvet Wall-Hanging by Stig Lindberg Sweden
early 1960s
In the early 1960s Stig Lindberg created three different wall-hangings for the famous NK department store. Each was a multi-color silkscreen print on cotton velvet, produced in small numbers and now very rare indeed.
The designs were largely abstract, in an exuberant biomorphic idiom that belongs entirely to the 1960s (though actually somewhat ahead of their time, anticipating "psychedelia" by nearly five years). Each of the three tapestries depicts a brightly-colored organism of some sort, mostly plant-like but dynamic nonetheless.
This particular design appeared, appropriately, in the ultra-mod cult film "Modesty Blaise" (directed by Joseph Losey; starring Monica Vitti, Terence Stamp, and Dirk Bogarde), whose art direction amounted to an inventory of the best of mid-'sixties material culture, with lavishly-decorated sets rivalled by few other films from that era.
