"Capitello" Chair by Studio 65 Italy
1971
The "Capitello" became an international cult object in 1972 with the landmark MOMA exhibition, "Italy : The New Domestic Landscape". An early peek at what would come to be called Post-Modernism, the "Capitello" chair was designed by the extraordinarily witty Piero Gilardi and Studio 65, and manufactured by the company Gufram, in Turin, Italy.
A masterpiece of Pop Art, the "Capitello" is both a serious piece of sculpture and a sophisticated joke. Thus the top of a classical Greek column is taken entirely out of context to be used as a chair, while the seemingly hard and cold surface is in fact very soft and flexible. It looks like weathered stone, until you sink into it.
